THE MIRACLE OF COMPASSION: AN INSPIRING STORY OF A CAREGIVER HELPING A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND PATIENT WALK AGAIN

This is the story of Miss Emma from Adera Team Community & Alliance Sdn Bhd, who cared for a wheelchair-bound patient and helped them eventually walk again.

Achieving this required immense patience, consistency in massage therapy and physiotherapy, and strong emotional support. It was a time-consuming journey, yet small changes—such as improved muscle control—offered a great ray of hope.

Below is a concise guide to the care phases that help a patient regain the ability to walk:

1. Emotional & Mental Support

Continuous Motivation:

Patients often struggle with feelings of hopelessness. Celebrate every small milestone, even if it is simply the ability to wiggle a toe.

Avoid Over-Dependence:

Encourage the patient to perform basic tasks independently (such as eating or wiping their face) to build self-confidence.

2. Physical Exercise, Massage Therapy & Physiotherapy

Regular Massage Therapy:

Perform therapeutic massages daily to improve blood circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, and prevent muscle atrophy. Proper massage techniques help soften tense tissues and prepare the patient’s body for movement exercises.

Consistency:

Perform light exercises daily, such as leg stretches, slow leg lifts, and core-strengthening exercises.

Professional Assistance:

Seek expert guidance from a certified physiotherapist. You can learn various techniques to ensure that massage therapy and exercises are performed safely and effectively.

3. Transfer & Safety (Bed-to-Wheelchair Transition)

Ensure Wheelchair Safety:

Always lock the wheelchair brakes, lift the footrests, and unfasten the seatbelt before transferring the patient.

Proper Technique:

Position the wheelchair close to the patient’s stronger side to facilitate movement.

4. Nutritional & Health Support

Balanced Diet:

A diet rich in calcium and protein is crucial for building muscle and bone strength, complementing the positive effects of massage therapy and daily exercise.

Regular Check-ups:

Consult a doctor or a neurologist/orthopedist regularly to monitor the recovery progress of nerves and joints.
