From SME to Category King: How Malaysian Businesses Can Create Markets Instead of Chasing Competitors

Phoenix Design expands into West Malaysia to help SMEs break out of price wars and build category-defining brands for regional growth

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA – Phoenix Design Pte. Ltd., a Singapore-based strategic branding and marketing consultancy, has announced its expansion into West Malaysia, establishing a presence in Petaling Jaya to support Malaysian SMEs in moving beyond price-based competition and building category-defining brands capable of regional expansion.

The expansion comes at a time when many Malaysian businesses across food services, retail, manufacturing, education, and consumer products are experiencing increasing pressure from commoditisation, rising operating costs, and intensified market competition. In many sectors, differentiation has narrowed, forcing businesses into price-driven competition that limits long-term growth.

Phoenix Design’s entry into the Malaysian market introduces a category creation approach designed to help businesses shift from competing within existing markets to defining entirely new ones. Central to this approach is its proprietary Category Hack Blueprint™, a strategic framework used to identify untapped customer needs, reposition businesses around distinct value propositions, and build defensible market categories.

Rather than focusing on incremental marketing improvements, the framework aims to address a structural issue faced by many SMEs: the lack of clear market distinction.

“Many businesses in Malaysia are operating in highly competitive environments where product quality alone is no longer enough to sustain growth,” said Herry Ho, Founder and Managing Director of Phoenix Design.

“The real challenge is not effort or capability. It is positioning. When businesses look and sound similar, competition naturally shifts to price. Category creation gives companies a way to step out of that cycle by defining a space where they are no longer compared on the same terms.”

Founded in Singapore, Phoenix Design has worked with organisations across Southeast Asia spanning education, manufacturing, healthcare, professional services, and consumer industries. Its work integrates strategic branding, customer experience design, and business growth strategy to help organisations strengthen market positioning and unlock new growth pathways.

As part of its Malaysia expansion, Phoenix Design has established a base in Petaling Jaya and is exploring collaborations with local business partners, industry associations, and growth-focused organisations. The firm also plans to develop local capabilities through selective hiring to support ongoing client engagements and regional projects.

Rather than positioning itself as an external consultancy entering a new market, Phoenix Design is framing its role as a strategic partner to Malaysian businesses seeking to expand beyond domestic competition and into regional markets such as Singapore and broader ASEAN economies.

“We see Malaysia as one of the most important growth markets in Southeast Asia, not only because of its strong entrepreneurial base, but because of its potential to produce category-leading businesses,” Ho added.

“Our long-term vision is to help Malaysian companies move from competing in crowded industries to leading new categories that can scale across borders. When businesses define their own category, they are not just competing for customers. They are shaping how the market understands value. That shift is what enables sustainable regional growth.”

Phoenix Design’s expansion reflects a broader regional trend in which SMEs are increasingly seeking strategic support to move beyond traditional marketing approaches and adopt more structured growth and positioning frameworks.
