Feline Stress Comes Into Focus Among Malaysia’s Indoor Cat Owners

Feline stress is often overlooked, with cats expressing discomfort through subtle changes in behaviour rather than obvious signs. Pawsona explores why indoor cats may experience stress from changes in their environment, routines and multi-cat dynamics, and shares practical guidance to help Malaysian cat owners recognise these signs and create a more supportive home environment.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — 12 SEPTEMBER 2026 — For many Malaysian cat owners, keeping cats indoors is an important part of providing a safe home. But changes within that environment — from moving house and renovations to new family members, pets or changes in routine — can also affect feline behaviour and wellbeing.

Unlike humans, cats cannot explain when something is making them uncomfortable. Instead, stress can appear through subtle behavioural changes that owners may overlook.

Recognising the Signs

Hiding more frequently, withdrawing from people or other cats, changes in grooming, reduced appetite, increased vocalisation, unusual scratching, irritability or aggression can all be signs that a cat may be experiencing stress.

Changes in litter box behaviour, including urinating outside the litter box, can also indicate that something is wrong.

However, behavioural changes should not automatically be attributed to stress. Sudden or persistent changes can also have medical causes, so owners should consult a veterinarian where appropriate.

What Can Cause Stress at Home?

Indoor cats can be particularly sensitive to changes in their surroundings. Common triggers include home renovations, moving, unfamiliar visitors, new pets or household members, loud noises and disruptions to established routines.

Multi-cat households can also create tension when cats have to compete for food, water, resting areas or litter boxes. Providing sufficient resources in separate areas can help reduce competition. A commonly recommended guideline for litter boxes is one per cat, plus one extra.

Indoor cats also need opportunities for play, scratching, climbing and exploration to support their natural behaviours and provide mental stimulation.

Creating a Calmer Home

Simple changes can make the home environment more supportive for cats. Maintaining predictable feeding and play routines, providing quiet hiding places and elevated resting areas, and offering regular interactive play and enrichment can help cats feel more secure.

When possible, major changes such as moving, renovations or introducing a new pet should also be done gradually. Owners can also learn more about helping a cat settle into a new environment and creating a predictable space during periods of change.

“Cats don’t always show stress in ways that are obvious to us. A cat that suddenly hides more, changes its grooming habits or stops using the litter box normally may be communicating that something in its environment isn’t working for them,” said Pawsona.

“Understanding these changes gives owners an opportunity to look at what may have changed at home and consider how they can make the environment more supportive.”

As part of a broader approach to feline wellbeing, calming care options such as pheromone diffusers, calming sprays, collars and calming supplements or treats may also be incorporated alongside good environmental management and enrichment.

Pawsona encourages cat owners to look beyond obvious signs and pay closer attention to changes in their cats’ behaviour, routines and surroundings.
