New Study Shows EMDR-Based Mobile Apps May Reduce PTSD Symptoms and Comorbid Issues

A new study led by psychologist Mark Grant, published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research (April 25, 2025), reveals that the Healing Trauma App Series (HTAS)—a suite of EMDR-based mobile apps—significantly reduced PTSD symptoms in users over a 3-month period. Conducted in Melbourne, the pilot trial showed nearly 40% symptom reduction among participants. With over 100,000 downloads and high user ratings, the apps are gaining traction as an accessible mental health tool.

Melbourne, April 25, 2025- A new study published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research reveals that a mobile app series based on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy could offer relief for individuals living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated symptoms like insomnia, chronic pain, and anxiety.

The pilot randomized controlled trial, led by psychologist Mark Grant, tested the Healing Trauma App Series (HTAS), a suite of four mobile apps, on 77 PTSD sufferers with comorbid conditions. Over 3 months, participants in the treatment group experienced significant reductions in PTSD symptoms compared to a waitlist control group, with average symptom reduction reaching nearly 40%.

“This is the first study of its kind to evaluate EMDR-inspired apps for PTSD,” said Grant. “While the sample was small and dropout rates were high, the results are promising- especially for those dealing with complex PTSD and physical comorbidities.”

HTAS includes four targeted apps: Anxiety Release, Overcoming, Sleep Restore, and Calm and Confident. Each integrates bilateral stimulation (BLS), guided imagery, and EMDR-informed techniques to address the four most common PTSD-related symptoms. BLS is a treatment element of EMDR, which has been found to stimulate relaxation and access to positive mental states.

The authors recommend a larger-scale study with added clinician support to improve adherence and further validate the findings. With over 100,000 combined downloads and a 4+ star rating, the HTAS apps are already making headway in the mobile mental health landscape.
